Earlier this year, Crunchbase created what it calls The Unicorn Board, a curated collection of all of the private companies with a valuation of $1 billion or more. It’s a comprehensive list containing some key data, but it doesn’t contain the domain name each company uses.
To remedy this, I created a list of all of the domain names used by unicorn companies, according to their Crunchbase profiles (listed in two parts, part one and part two). From that data, I released a statistics article where we discovered that .com is the overwhelming favorite among unicorn companies, with .io coming in a distant second.
On the chart above, a sizable slice of the pie is dedicated to “Others,” meaning other extensions used by the unicorns. At the request of some readers, I’ve included all of the extensions, including those in the “Other” category, used by unicorn companies.
This data is based on information attained in June 2022.
