The domain, which sold for $99,999 in a buy-now transaction on the Afternic marketplace, beat the $75,000 price paid for Video.us in 2007 to become the largest publicly disclosed .US sale of all time.
Drive.us quickly transferred to corporate registrar MarkMonitor, but until October 2022, the domain held a generic MarkMonitor Whois profile, obscuring the real owner’s identity.
Now, Whois data for Drive.us has been updated to show that the current owner is the multinational financial services company Santander. More specifically, the domain is registered to Santander Consumer USA Inc., Santander’s US corporation that predominantly offers financing for new and used cars.
As of publishing, Drive.us resolves to a 403 error page, but it will be interesting to see what Santander’s plans for the domain are.
